Fishing Report by Captain Ned Small

With tropical storm Fay drifting out of range and diminishing winds forecast for the near future, we are looking for a return to ‘normal,’ summertime conditions. There’s still lots of ‘junior tarpon,’ in the backcountry. Fish from 5 to 20 pounds, with a fair number of snook mixed in, averaging 20 to 25 inches, and an occasional 30 inch fish that will hit you when you least expect it. If you’re after snook and reds primarily, the outside is where you want to be with some of the best fishing south of Everglades City between Chatam River and Lostmans. Any technique will work, but you need to be out there early to avoid the heat at midday. We’ve been leaving the dock an hour before sunrise in order to be at our first fishing spot as the sun comes up. It’s probably best to hit that morning bite, enjoy the fun and get home and out of the sun around noon.
